Class Response: February 23, 2009

Today we learned about 'modernity' described by detraditionalization, rationalization, and fragmentation. Under the characteristic of rationalization we learned a term called McDonaldization which has drastically influenced the American society and how functions and operates. Some key principles within McDonalization are Efficiency, Calculability, Predictability, Control, Irrationality or rationality. Our conversation then turned to the church and how the church functions and operates. I don't think these are negative principles. I think there needs to be balance between structure/organization with being spirit led. I believe we need to incorporate gifts of administration in our church worship, ministries, and other programs. Once again i think it needs to be done with Christ in the center open to the spirits leading.
