Reflections: Chapter 3 - Barker

Chapter 3 provides helpful insight into how ‘meanings’ are understood and formed in culture. If language is the means and medium for the generations for significance or meaning, my church needs to be cautious in what language is used on Sunday, in small groups, and other gatherings. Because people come from all different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, the meaning of word can vary due to those differences. A Chinese woman hearing the word ‘shame’ in the church will have a completely different understanding than a Dutch woman. Being sensitive and intentional in explaining ideas, words, and concepts can be helpful in sharing the Gospel will all who come to our church.
